Writing a love letter can be intimidating. Almost everyone will confess it’s challenging to express your emotions on paper. Even the pros struggle with this task. Take just one piece of advice from both the experts and novices; be creative.
However it gets on paper—words, drawings, photos—the unique touch of your originality will make the daunting venture slowly defeatable and surprisingly fun and rewarding.
Love letter tips
Michelle Karl, a licensed therapist specializing in women issues, suggests these techniques to spur the creative juices and help the text flow off the pen and fingers and onto the keyboard and paper. Her education and career has allowed her to understand the strengths and weaknesses in couple’s relationships and she offers these words of wisdom for your letter.
- Make it personal, originality counts! Describe a great memory the two of you have shared together.
- What makes your loved one special? Domestic duties are fine but not very romantic. Go for qualities or characteristics that are endearing to you.
- What do you admire about your loved one? What does he do better than most people you know, maybe even you?
- Even a very short note is fine if it is really from the heart.
- Make it real. Lovers know when you are fibbing.
It doesn't have to be complicated
Rachel Bogel writes children books. Her approach to a love letter comes from tactics she applies to her own writing. She likes to keep it simple and accentuate the positive. Rachel explains, “Always point out what someone does that makes you happy.” Reminder notes and simple statements make for great love letters.
- Try and describe an emotion that your lover makes you feel.
- Include a favorite photo of the two of you in the note.
- Write the note when sitting in a spot they might typically sit in. Their energy can give gobs of inspiration.
Remember that this is an act of love, you can do no wrong. Honestly, sincerity and simplicity work best for all ages.
Don’t be shy
Get a little extra artistic and add a photo, scent or memorable item. A tear out from a magazine of a beach can symbolize a vacation or special event the two of you attended. Even salt water or perfume dabbled on the letter can evoke emotions before the reader even views the words. These tips might help make the note a bit more personal.
- Place a napkin, matchbook, pen or item from a special place where the two of you visited together. The extra touch will really make an impression.
- Spray your favorite perfume or cologne on the note. Even if the scent doesn’t last long, the initial aroma will arouse passion.
- Present the note or letter in a frame. Place a picture in a frame and tell your lover to keep the note behind the picture. That way, the letter can always be with them, hidden in secrecy.
